Edmonds-Woodway’s boys cross country team has a bright future.

The Warriors are coming off a strong fourth place finish at last year’s 3A state championships. Though the team’s top two finishers graduated, Edmonds-Woodway returns its next four runners – junior Lucas Lacambra, Grant Christian, Dylan Hartono and sophomore Sebastion Olson – on a squad without any seniors.

“We’ve got an almost all-junior team,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Al Bonney said. “What that means I don’t have any idea, but I think it means we have the capability of at least being fourth again or moving up to third.”

The top 15 runners at state typically are mostly seniors with a handful of juniors and maybe one sophomore, Bonney noted.

The biggest surprise of the season has been the performance of Deyago Peraza, who was the Warriors’ No. 2 runner behind Lacambra at the Carl Westling South Whidbey Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16. Lacambra finished fourth overall and Peraza was fifth.

“He’s running well,” Bonney said of Peraza. “The top five are really solid. Then we’ve got some work to do.”

The Warriors finished second behind Redmond in the team competition, just two points behind – 51 to 53.

“I thought the team did great,” Lacambra said “We were all packed together. We all run pretty much the same speed. … I think we’re going to do really well this season.”

Hartono and Christian finished 12th and 13th and sophomores Jacob Willcox and Brendan Ellermeier placed 21st and 31st.

“The kids are working hard and we’ve got a lot of depth,” Bonney said. “We’ve just got to keep getting better.”

The next big test for Edmonds-Woodway is the Nike 10th annual Twilight Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Cedarcrest Golf Course in Marysville.

“It is a big meet. It’s one of the fastest of the season,” Lacambra said. “So we’re going to go hard for that, definitely.”
