Winona Alderson Henderson: 1921-2017

Dec 20, 2017

Born on April 22, 1921, to Emma and Herbert Alderson, Winona Alderson Henderson passed away on November 26, 2017 in Edmonds.

After graduating from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, Winona attended the University of Washington and studied nursing. She was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority.

She left the UW early and met her future husband, Melvin D. Henderson, USMC, in Hawaii. They were married earlier than planned – on Dec. 8, 1941, as war was declared after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Winona was a devoted Marine Corps wife, and her greatest passion was being “Mom” to five children. She was an accomplished pianist, loved gardening, tennis, racquetball and baking (her cookies, divinity and potato salad were legendary).

Volunteering was a priority, and she was a member of the Children’s Orthopedic Hospital guild, volunteered at the American Cancer Society and was a member of PEO.

She began a working career at the age of 58 with the Washington State Department of Corrections and retired in 1996.

Winona will be remembered for her welcoming smile, her sense of humor, her giving spirit and her love for her family. She is survived by her five children: James (Carolyn), Mel Jr. (Libby), Vicki, Chris (Patty) and Gini (Rich).

She was adored by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking donations be made to Children’s Hospital, Seattle.
