Who is Ed!? | Ed! Says

By Pam Stuller, Advisory Board President | Apr 02, 2015

A bright pop of green appeared downtown in the form of courtesy umbrellas this winter.

They were the idea of a member of the Edmonds Downtown Alliance – that’s Ed! for short.

Ed! was formed in early 2013 as a Business Improvement District (BID).

Through local business assessments, BIDs provide funding for programs such as beautification, marketing and parking – and those handy green umbrellas!

Over 300 members strong, Ed! is a diverse collection of retail and service businesses that call downtown Edmonds home.

Our boundaries range from around 6th to the waterfront and from Bell to just beyond Howell.

Ed! Says

“Ed! Says” is our new monthly column on the Edmonds Beacon commerce page.

It provides a window into our work of keeping Edmonds lively, attractive and prosperous. Like …

Ed! was the force behind December’s downtown Edmonds’ holiday fun, including trolley rides and family movie nights.

Ed! collaborated with the Downtown Edmonds Merchants Association, the city and sponsors like Rick Steves and the Mayo Family to make Edmonds a hub of fun for the holidays. And it was good for business too.

Last year we also launched Ed!’s website, edmondsdowntown.org, with its robust member directory.

Wondering where to grab a bite downtown? Need a massage? Looking for a local accountant before April 15?

The website showcases the diverse and talented businesses located here. Think local first.

And Ed! members have an ambitious 2015 work plan. A few project highlights include:

• Introduce a dynamic transit ad campaign – watch for DelightEd! ads on Metro and Community Transit busses this May and June.

• Evaluate locations and install bike racks – research shows that bicyclists spend 24 percent more per month than people who travel by car.

• Research a digital outdoor directory – it’s another way to bring our website to life with a dynamic map and downtown businesses at your fingertips.

• Improve signage to direct visitors to public parking lot locations downtown.

Project funding?

Do you have an idea that will benefit downtown Edmonds?

Check out Ed!’s new Grant Program. Inspired by best practices in grant-making, Ed!’s Grant Program leverages the ingenuity of our members and community.

If you have an idea that you’d like to implement and it meets our project guidelines, we have funding.

Grant Program details and application are located on our home page at edmondsdowntown.org.

Ed! wants you

Each year, Ed! is fueled by a focused budget and a tremendous amount of volunteerism.

Ed! is a member-driven organization; our members create and implement the work plan and budget. Join us!

Our Annual Member Meeting is at 6 p.m. on April 30 in the Plaza Room above the library.

We’ll be showcasing our projects - past and future - voting for four board members (nominations due by April 16 to hello@edmondsdowntown.org), and hearing from guest speaker, Leslie Smith, director at the Pioneer Square Business Improvement Area. All members and the public are welcome to join us.

In the meantime, we meet twice monthly at the Edmonds Center for the Arts in Room 225 at 8 a.m. - on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Our next meeting is April 9.

Ed! says, “We’d love to see you there!”
