We all deserve a break | Letter

Jun 23, 2017

Remember that old McDonald’s commercial, “You deserve a break today”? Well, we all desperately need a break these days from the seemingly unending tsunami of fake and real political news nearly drowning us.

My personal solution?

Just say enough! While I’m not pretending to be an ostrich that sticks his head in the sand, I am trying to wean myself off of CNN, MSNBC and The New York Times.

I’m intentionally stepping up my enjoyment of alt activities. Like volunteering more, walking to the marina to see the dogs play at their park, looking up delicious recipes to cook, and turning off my phone, computer and TV.

So how, you might ask, is all of this working for me?

I’m lovin' it!

You raise the very good point that we are inundated with fake news (and ginned-up outrage), and we need more people like you who volunteer more, turn off the TV and take other life-enhancing steps!  But while taking a break from political news can be a much-needed mental-health relief, cutting real news off can lead some to neglecting the duty of all citizens to be informed and vote wisely - or even to be an activist when necessary. It is up to all of us to ignore fake news, which is nothing more than crude propaganda.

Enjoy your break - and the wonderful weather!
