Walking around the block to raise Alzheimer’s awareness

Edmonds Landing sponsors third annual event

Every September and October, more than 500,000 people come together in more than 600 communities to advance the fight against Alzheimer’s disease in Walk to End Alzheimer’s benefits. This year, that includes 16 walks in Washington and Oregon.

Edmonds doesn’t have an official event – the closest are in Seattle (Sept. 29) and Everett (Oct. 6) – but for three years in a row, Edmonds Landing assisted living has held a version for residents, family and friends called "Walk the Block," a fundraiser and awareness campaign in the fight against Alzheimer's disease.

The most recent walk, Sept. 6, raised almost $2,500, marketing director Victoria Cole said. Edmonds Landing matched what other businesses and individuals donated.

More than 30 residents, staff and others walked south of Edmonds Landing’s front door to Dayton Street, right on Dayton, right on SR 104, east on James Street and back south to the start.

Some relied on walkers, while others made the trek in wheelchairs pushed by staff.

“I’m thrilled,” 91-year-old Velva Saltarelli said before the walk. It was Saltarelli who suggested the walk to Cole three years ago as a way to honor her husband, who died five years ago from Alzheimer’s.

Saltarelli and others wore purple shirts or scarves, as it’s the color for Alzheimer’s awareness. Some carried plastic, pinwheel-type flowers that were one of four colors.

Blue is for those with Alzheimer’s; purple for those who have lost someone to Alzheimer’s; yellow for an Alzheimer’s caregiver; and orange for those walking in support of Alzheimer’s research.

The color white is reserved for the day when there is a cure for Alzheimer’s.

Edward Jones, the financial advice company, is a nationwide sponsor of Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and was on hand for the walk around the block.

“We were excited to be asked to participate this year,” said Juliana Van Buskirk from Edward Jones in Edmonds, which had a table stocked with rubber wristbands, ribbon magnets, lapel pins and other accessories.

In 2017, Edward Jones associates formed more than 2,700 teams that together raised more than $2.3 million to benefit Alzheimer’s Association care, support and research efforts.

Overall, Edward Jones has committed cash, in-kind support and employee fundraising that will exceed $12 million over five years to support the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association.

“The walk is a step the in right direction and everyone had fun in their purple bandanas, beads and hats," Van Buskirk said.
