Cows eating grass at DD Graybeal Ranch in Montana produce beef that is free of growth hormones and antibiotics, is delicious, healthy and delivered directly to your home.

Almost everyone who has ever enjoyed a delicious steak at a fine restaurant has pondered the same question: How come I can’t find steaks this good at the grocery store?

Some of the answers are simple. Restaurant steaks are cooked by well-trained chefs using the proper equipment and methods. Their beef is aged and seasoned properly. They do serve U.S. Department of Agriculture graded Prime beef – the highest graded cuts.

Home cooks can replicate most of those details, with a little practice. But they generally can’t find that most important ingredient at the store – top quality beef.

Until now. A three-generation-old ranch in central Montana – the heart of cattle country – has begun shipping to customers in the Northwest top quality beef that’s more flavorful and better for you than what you can find at most restaurants.

MontanaBeef406, operated by the DD Graybeal Ranch in the rolling hills outside Hall, Montana, ships a variety of beef cuts, individually wrapped for customers’ convenience, every week.

Brothers Doug and Dan Graybeal, who oversee the family-owned ranch, said they ship the beef in Styrofoam coolers on Mondays and Tuesdays to make sure customers receive their orders before the weekend.

There are plenty of options designed to meet every customer’s taste and budget. For example, the Friends and Family Box includes a 3.5-pound rolled chuck roast, two 12-ounce boneless rib steaks, two 10-ounce New York strip steaks, four 8-ounce sirloin steaks, two 5-ounce tenderloin steaks, four 8-ounce round steaks and five 1-pound packages of lean ground beef.

The Grande Ground-Beef Box, designed for the budget-conscious family, provides 20 1-pound packages of lean ground beef. There are plenty of options in between, some including filet mignon, cube steak, stew meat, tri-tip steaks and other cuts.

The Graybeal family has been fine-tuning their operation for more than 80 years, raising cattle that are grown to provide healthy as well as delicious beef. They believe they have generated a herd of beef cattle that produces quality beef that, simply, cannot be matched.

It begins with the type of cows they breed – Irish Black bulls and Angus cows. The Irish Black was developed to maximize positive traits like fertility, meat quality and consistency. The beef produced by Angus cows, more familiar to most people, is famed for traits like tenderness, marbling and good taste. Put together, they are a match made in beef lovers’ heaven.

Born and raised on the DD Graybeal Ranch, the cattle are grass-fed only, free to wander the pastures, with plenty of water and shade, throughout their lives. They’re never fed any grains or unnatural food sources. They’re never fed any antibiotics or growth hormones, either.

“Grass-fed beef is a leaner meat,” Doug Graybeal explained. “It grows more slowly and more naturally, like it’s supposed to.”

Then, they’re harvested at peak condition between 24 and 30 months of age. The beef is dry-aged for 18 days before being trimmed, making it even more flavorful and tender.

That kind of care and quality simply isn’t available in your typical grocery store, Dan Graybeal said.

“The beef you buy in stores generally goes to feed lots in the Midwest where they’re given massive amounts of growth hormones and antibiotics,” he said. “They pound as much corn and barley into them as they can.” The point is to make the cows grow bigger and faster, which is great for the producers, but not the customers.

By taking more time and care with their cattle, the folks at DD Graybeal Ranch are producing more delicious and healthier beef.

Consider: Grass-fed beef have 80 percent less total fat, 30 percent less cholesterol, four times more vitamin A, 10 times more vitamin E, and more of the essential fatty acids Omega 3 and Omega 6.

“People are getting more health conscious,” Doug Graybeal noted. “And they should. Obviously, it’s what I want my own kids eating.”

All of MontanaBeef406 cattle is processed at a nearby government certified processing facility inspected by the Department of Agriculture.

Add it all up, and customers finally have access to quality beef that matches and exceeds any available in America.

“We feel like it’s the best product out there,” Doug Graybeal said, “the best grass-fed beef available.”

But don’t just take his word for it. Find out for yourself. Ordering is simple at montanabeef406.com or by calling 406-544-4151. (If you haven’t figured it out, 406 is the area code in Montana, the only state in the country that has just one area code.)

Once you’ve made your order, it’s shipped, vacuum-sealed and flash frozen in safe, thick, freezer plastic that seals in flavor and locks out oxygen.

It’ll be delivered within days. You’ll never be envious of restaurants again.
