Thomas Hugh Bennett: 1935-2017

Tom Bennett was born Dec. 30, 1935, in Oakland, California, and died Nov.17, 2017, in Edmonds. Between these two dates he graced the world with his bright countenance, unbridled enthusiasm, piercing wit and unwavering devotion to family.

After graduating from Magee High School in Vancouver, B.C., Tom attended UBC and UC Berkeley, joining Beta Theta Pi, playing rugby and earning a bachelor’s degree in business. Following this, he joined the Army Security Agency as an intelligence translator in Germany and later moved to Seattle, where he met the love of his life, Marilyn Johansen, from Vashon. The couple married in 1963.

Tom’s career included sales for Sun Life Insurance and Honeywell, then work for the UW in the Academic Computer Center, the School of Nursing and as Assistant to the Director of Branch Campus Planning. He also was a popular lecturer of business. He held an MBA (Seattle U) and a PhD in Education (UW).

Tom was a man of faith who loved his family dearly and always attended his children’s and grandchildren’s sports and performances. He and his wife Marilyn celebrated 54 years of happy marriage.

He served on the Seattle-Nantes Sister City Association board of directors, and with SNSCA he set up a scholarship in his mother's name for college students studying French.

Tom is predeceased by his father William (1979), mother Frances (2010) and son Karl (2008). He is survived by wife Marilyn, sister Anna (Ted), daughter Kristen (Jens) and their children Kari, Leif and Maren, and daughter Karen (Alan) and their children Fran, Mia and Elsa.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6 at First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach. Memorial donations can be given in Tom’s name to First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach or the Seattle-Nantes Sister City Association.
