The holiday spirit is alive in Edmonds | Mayor's Corner

By Dave Earling | Dec 21, 2018

Last Sunday late afternoon, my wife and I stopped at Scott's restaurant at the county line for an early dinner. I suspected the Seahawk crowd would have dissipated and there would be available tables.

Wrong!

The place was packed! We lucked out and managed to get a small table at the back of the bar.

The holiday energy across the restaurant was fabulous. Families, small parties, couples, all age groups, all enjoying and adding to a truly festive holiday season. I found the joy in the room inspiring, and it brought me back to thinking about the wonderful community and region we live in and how much we love and care about living here.

Let me give you a small example of the community coming together in the spirit of joy and helping one another in this special season.

As many of you know, every year we have a giving tree in the lobby of City Hall. The end of November, the tree was up with sparkling lights and a couple hundred red tags for us to select from to purchase a gift for a child.

On about Dec. 9, when coming through the lobby, I noticed we still had scores of tags on the tree. When I went home, I posted on Facebook the need to get all of the tags gone pronto. The response was fabulous.

On Monday, Dec. 10, the tags began to disappear as word got around. Local VFW Post 8870 and American Legion Post 66 reached out and volunteered the toys they were gathering for children at their Christmas dinner.

A friend of mine didn't have time to pick up a gift, but where could he leave money? And last Friday a gentleman came through and picked up the remaining tags saying, "Every kid needs a Christmas present!"

And the tags were all gone on Dec. 15. Thanks to those who got the message and sprang into action.

This is Edmonds, folks. A community that cares and is willing to help and to share. Thank you for that!

My family and I wish you and yours a joyous holiday and a very Merry Christmas!

Thank you, and happy holidays!
