OfferUp strikes again.

Early Saturday, June 23, an observant neighbor spied a suspicious man taking landscaping equipment out of the bed of a parked pickup truck and tossing the items over an adjacent fence in the parking lot of an apartment complex located in the 5900 block of 200th St. SW, Lynnwood.

Lynnwood police contacted the truck’s owner, who confirmed someone had stolen several pieces of equipment, including a weed eater, a leaf blowerand a chain saw.

But officers were unable to immediately locate the suspect or the property.

Later in the evening, the victim contacted police sayinga family member had located his stolen equipment listed for sale on OfferUp, a popular mobile marketplace app which has a history of foiling thieves when they try to sell their stolen goods.

The victim was able to describe specific characteristics of the stolen equipment, which matched the photographs of the items in the OfferUp listing.

Upon further research, a patrol officer noticed that the same individual selling the stolen equipment also had a pickup truck tailgate listed for sale that matched a previously reported vehicle prowl.

On June 24, officers set-up a sting operation to meet with the seller of the stolen items.

One of the officers, posing as a buyer, agreed to meet with the seller in the parking lot of Dick’s Drive-In, on Highway 99 in Edmonds.

At about 7 p.m., officers moved in and arrested two males and a female, ranging in age from 30 to 44. Two were booked on trafficking of stolen property and one was booked on possession of stolen property.

The original victim’s stolen leaf blower was recovered, but the other items have not been located.

A vehicle associated with the suspects was impounded, and police detectives executed a search warrant to recover several truck end-gates believed to have been stolen from other victims in the same neighborhood.
