Storm denies Mavericks | Boys soccer

A year after winning only one game the entire regular season, Meadowdale finished 2018 with an extended run in the 3A District playoffs.

The Mavericks’ season ended with a 3-1 loss to Squalicum in a winner-to-state/loser-out game Saturday, May 12, at Shoreline Stadium.

“It was a great year for Meadowdale no matter what the end result was,” coach Mike Nelson said. “I think the team went leaps and bounds beyond what anyone expected. The boys really showed what they were capable of. They set the foundation for hopefully successful years to come.”

Senior Lauro Armengol scored the lone goal for the Mavericks (11-8-2). The Storm took a 2-1 lead into halftime and added its third goal with about two minutes left in the second half.

“We had a few opportunities to tie up the game,” Nelson said. “We just couldn’t execute. Squalicum was a good squad. They were able to put pressure on us and take away some of our opportunities. Much respect to Squalicum and their team.”

After dispatching Edmonds-Woodway 2-1, the Mavericks edged district rival Lynnwood 2-1 in a shootout in another loser-out game on Thursday, May 10, to advance to Saturday’s contest. Freshman River Stewart scored his team-leading 15th goal of the season.

Meadowdale graduates nine seniors including goalkeeper Ryan Gillis, forward Armengol, rightback Javier Ramirez and midfielder Dominic DeSanto.

“We’re losing a few other seniors who contributed with their on-the-field leadership,” Nelson said.

The senior class was an integral part of a team that was determined to develop a winning culture in the program, Nelson said.

“Those type of players are hard to replace. It’s a difficult task to do. but it’s achievable,” Nelson said. “I’m proud of the boys and their hard work, their sacrifice and their families’ sacrifice.”
