Season comes to an end for King’s | Girls basketball

King’s came up short in the fourth quarter.

Meridian outscored the Knights 14-7 to pull out a 48-42 victory in a 1A winner-to-state regionals/loser-out Bi-District girls basketball game Saturday, Feb. 18, at Mountlake Terrace High School.

Both teams stayed within striking distance of each other for most of the game. The Trojans’ biggest lead was at the end of the game.

“There were tons of lead changes,” King’s coach Dan Taylor said. “It was neck and neck for the most part.”

The Knights led going into the final period but then faltered.

“We started not to make shots. We had ill-advised turnovers,” Taylor said.

Sophomore Dominique Kirton scored 13 points and senior Hannah Echelbarger added 12 points for King’s, which finished the season 12-11 overall.

The Knights, who finished tied for second in the Cascade Conference at 9-3, returned five seniors, but only a couple had significant varsity experience. Graduation and transfers depleted King’s of some of its experience.

“With the amount of players who didn’t return, I thought our girls overachieved,” Taylor said.

Taylor added that the lack of playoff experience among the players hurt the Knights, who lost to Lynden Christian in the district title game. King’s won its playoff opener against Mount Baker.

“I thought the girls stepped it up and played well,” Taylor said. “We had a good win against Mount Baker and went toe to toe with Lynden Christian. We were right there at the end. We ran out of gas. The girls exceeded expectations. … Our goal was to get back to Yakima. We fell a game or two short. I’m still very proud of these girls. I would say we had a successful season.”

With all five seniors playing major roles, King’s will be quite a different looking team next season.

“We’ve got some younger girls who’ll need to grow and develop as players,” Taylor said. “We have a good eighth grade class. … It’ll be a truly rebuilding  year.”
