Richard "Dick" Allen Engels: 1939-2017

Jul 19, 2017

Richard Allen Engels, 77, of Southport, North Carolina, passed away in St. Petersburg, Florida, on July 13, 2017, due to complications of a stroke. He was born Oct. 20, 1939, to Aubrey and Milly Engels in Edmonds, their only child.

Richard graduated from Edmonds High School in 1957 and attended the University of Puget Sound, University of Washington and finally pursued a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. He enjoyed the academic environment and eventually worked at both the University of Tennessee and Georgia Tech.

Richard was a demographer for the U.S. Census Bureau, a career path that allowed him the opportunity to live in multiple locations throughout the United States, and internationally in Saudi Arabia and Oman.

He also enjoyed dabbling in real estate investments, eventually developing and running a successful mini-storage business in North Carolina.

Growing up in a quaint seaside town instilled a love of water in Richard. He was never happier than on his boat or sitting beside the water relaxing with family or friends, ideally in a tropical location. Richard also loved four-legged friends and sports of almost any kind (especially football and baseball), pursuing tennis until his passing.

Richard is survived by his loving family: wife Joni Schinske; son Todd Engels (Dawn); daughter Leah Kemple (Chris); stepsons Jon Rizer and Jeff Sein; and six grandchildren, Shawn Kemple, Courtney Engels, Justin Kemple, Craig Engels, Brendan Kemple and Kevin Kemple.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Edmonds Historical Museum, P.O. Box 52, Edmonds, WA 98020.
