New bus stops on 196th St. opened just in time for shopping season

This is the most-requested stop location in the Community Transit local bus network
Nov 27, 2012

Community Transit began serving two new bus stops on 196th Street at 48th Ave. in Lynnwood Tuesday.

Route 196 between Edmonds and Lynnwood will serve those stops every half hour most of the day during the week and hourly on Saturdays.

These stops will provide convenient service to Fred Meyer and other nearby retail locations, and are a short walk to transit connections at the Lynnwood Transit Center.

In February 2013, Route 112 between Mountlake Terrace and north Lynnwood will be rerouted from 44th to 48th Ave., providing a frequent north-south connection that serves the Lynnwood Transit Center and the Lynnwood Civic Center (city hall, library, pool).

Community Transit first requested these stops a year ago as it prepared to launch the new Route 196 as part of its restructured local network in February 2012.

The City of Lynnwood was concerned about extra bus stops adding to congestion on this busy road and did not approve the request until now. The city has granted only temporary approval, meaning the stops can be removed at any time.

Meanwhile, Route 196 has become one of the agency’s fastest-growing new routes, serving nearly 10,000 passengers a month, or about 450 each weekday.

The route travels this popular corridor from the Edmonds waterfront in the west to Alderwood mall at its east end.

Riders have consistently requested bus stops in this location since Route 196 service began.

With addition of the two new stops (one in each direction), the westbound bus stop on 196th St. at 50th Ave. will close. This orphan stop is less than a quarter mile from the new stops and had no eastbound counterpart.
