Mildred (Kay) Chelemedos : 1922-2017

Feb 14, 2018

Mildred (Kay) Chelemedos, 95, of Edmonds, passed away peacefully on Nov. 21, 2017. She was the beloved wife of Peter Chelemedos, with whom she shared 74 years of marriage. Born and raised in Fall River, Massachusetts, on June 27, 1922, they met in New York City, married during World War II and settled in Seattle in 1946. In 1955 they moved north to Meadowdale.

Kay was a devoted mother, serving as Cub Scout leader for her son and Blue Bird and Campfire leader for her daughter in the 1950s. Later, she was active in the League of Women Voters, local Democratic politics, the University Unitarian Church and the Shoreline Unitarian Church.

A lifelong learner, she loved books on history, science fiction and fantasy, as well as biographies and mysteries. Membership in the Sherlock Holmes Society, the Seattle Storytellers Guild and the Audubon Society, among others, kept her busy.

She always had sympathy for the underdog and donated regularly to many charities too long to list.

Her last years were spent residing with her husband at Edmonds Landing Retirement residence in Edmonds.

She was preceded in death by her son, Peter Steven, and survived by her husband, Peter, and her daughter, Penelope Haase, also of Edmonds.

A celebration of life service will be held at the Shoreline Unitarian Church 2 p.m. March 10, 2018.
