Mary Lu Dieffenbach: 1935-2017

Oct 04, 2017

Mary Lu Dieffenbach, perhaps the world’s best mother, sister and, certainly, grandmother, passed away Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017.

Mary Lu – that’s spelled “Lu” and not “Lou” – will be lovingly remembered forever by her three sons and daughters-in-law: Jay and Paola (Boivin), of Scottsdale, Arizona; Alex and Tiffanie (McFarlane), of Issaquah; and Dan and Heather (Fay), of Calabasas, California, and her surviving sister, Janice Jo Bertsch, of Hillsboro, Oregon.

Her grandchildren Shane, Jessica, Riley, Matthew, Drew, Ty and Brady cherished the time spent with Grandma, including trips to Hawaii, ocean cruises and the many, many visits to the Oregon coast.

Mary Lu was preceded in death by a sister, Darlene Dalporto, of Sacramento, and by her husband of 47 years, Al Dieffenbach, who passed away in 2005.

Survivors also include nephews Tim, Scott, Marty, Joel, Paul, and nieces Canda, Roxanne and Sandra.

Mary Lu was born in Hitchcock, South Dakota. She graduated from the University of Oregon and, in addition to raising a happy family, made the world a better place at each of her professional stops: United Press International, Puget Sound Blood Center and Washington State Dental Association, among others.

She also volunteered with various organizations, including the Association for Women in Communications where she served two terms as president, and Little Red Schoolhouse, now called ChildStrive, a longtime agency that helps children with special needs. Mary Lu and Al were married in 1957 and lived in Washington (Spokane, Edmonds, Lynnwood and Silverdale) and late in life also had a home in Surprise, Arizona.

Celebration memorial 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7, at Edmonds United Methodist Church, 828 Caspers St., Edmonds. Reception following.
