Mary Elizabeth Kelemen: 1947-2018

May 10, 2019

Mary Elizabeth Kelemen, born March 31, 1947, in Monroe, Michigan, died April 14, 2018, of a cerebral hemorrhage in Seattle, Washington

Mary was the oldest of four girls born to William and Mary Kelemen. Her parents and youngest sister predeceased her.

Mary attended high school at Western Michigan University, achieving a bachelor’s with an accounting degree from Eastern Michigan University. She worked for McKercher Sheltered Workshop and the YWCA as the Financial Officer, then, with a group of women, purchased the Athena Bookstore, an independent bookstore in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

She became the director of Kalamazoo College Bookstore and was there for 10 years before moving to Seattle.

She came to Washington state to work as director of the Shoreline Community College Bookstore. During her 15 years at Shoreline, she assumed more responsibilities due to her extraordinary management and problem solving skills. She retired from Shoreline in 2016

Mary loved quilting, reading, cooking and travel, but nothing as much as her four children, Jennifer, Amy, David, Andy; and her three grandchildren, Allie, Oscar and Isabelle, all of whom survive her as well as her spouse, Linda Hilton

She will be greatly missed

At her request, there will be a private family service scattering her ashes at the Pacific Ocean. Mary was involved with the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program both here and in Michigan for six years and donating to the CASA Foundation in her name would be her wish.
