League alignments change in Wesco after reclassification

Edmonds-Woodway drops to 3A

Schools in the Wesco Conference, specifically Edmonds-Woodway, got a bit of a shake up on Wednesday after the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association released the latest reclassifications numbers on Wednesday.

With the new numbers, Edmonds-Woodway will now join the 3A ranks of the Wesco South league, dropping down from 4A.

The reclassifications changes will go into effect next fall through 2016. Classifications are based on student populations, counting freshman through juniors. The cutoff for 4A schools was 1,252.4 students or more. Schools in 3A had between 990.0 and 1,252.3 students. Final approval of the numbers will be made by the WIAA during its executive board meeting on Jan. 27.

Based on the final numbers, the 4A Wesco schools will play in one league, and the 3A schools will be split into north and south leagues, as they are now, but with more schools overall.

Edmonds School District Athletic Director Julie Stroncek said the Wesco schools athletic directors voted unanimously on the change.

Edmonds-Woodway will drop down to 3A, as it has 1,235.8 students. Lynnwood and Arlington will also drop to 3A. Shorecrest, which moves to 2A, will continue to compete in the 3A Wesco league, but will play in the 2A classification during the playoffs.

Warriors Athletic Director Angie McGuire said the school has been 4A since the creation of the classification in Wesco in the late 1990s. The change also brings all of the Edmonds School District high schools into the same league for the first time in decades.

“It definitely put some of the cross town rivalry back into the regular season,” said McGuire. She said years ago Edmonds-Woodway would play those teams as non-conference games, which were always fun.

“It will cut down on travel times, having all four back in the same league,” she said. “And it’s fun to comepte against each other.”

The new Wesco 4A league will be: Cascade, Jackson, Kamiak, Lake Stevens, Mariner, Monroe, Mount Vernon and Snohomish, playing in one league.

In 3A, the Wesco South league wil be: Edmonds-Woodway, Glacier Peak, Lynnwood, Meadowdale, Mountlake Terrace, Shorewood and Shorecrest. The 3A North league will consist of Arlington, Everett, Oak Harbor, Marysville-Pilchuck, Marysville-Getchell and Stanwood.

The Cascade Conference, which includes King's, will remain mostly the same, with Sultan moving down to 1A.
