King’s heads into this week’s 1A volleyball tournament eager and ready to defend its state title.

After edging Lynden Christian 3-2 in the 1A District finals, the Knights easily dispatched Overlake 3-0 in the 1A Bi-District championship match Saturday, Nov, 3, at Meridian High School in Bellingham.

Senior Baily McCutchen recorded 11 kills and senior Dominique Kirton had 10 kills.

King’s coach Bart Foley said the Knights are playing well.

“This team is so talented. We have 14 girls and any one of those girls could start on many teams,” Foley said.

1A state MVP Allie Hansen, who was lost to a back injury in September, has returned to the Knights and is playing in the back row.

“She’s a really good passer,” Foley said. “She’s a good defensive player. Her presence on the court helps everybody feel a little bit more confident.”

But it’s safe to say that the Knights (17-1) were able to successfully cope with the loss of Hansen.

“We didn’t skip a beat when she left,” Foley said.

Senior co-captains Kirton and McCutchen have been leaders from the start of the season. Kirton was named the league MVP and McCutchen earned first-team, all-league honors.

“Baily and Mo are definitely leaders and just experienced and great representatives for their team and their school,” Foley said.

Setter Ava Mason and middle hitter Noelle Alberda also earned first-team, all-league recognition.

With so many talented players Foley has confidence in whatever lineup is out on the floor

“Depending on how the match goes, I have a deep bench I’ll gladly dip into,” he added.

King’s faces Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) at 5:15 p.m., Friday, Nov 9, at the Yakima Valley SunDome.
