The Meadowdale boys basketball team can’t seem to catch a break.

On a night when senior Mustapha Sonko played his first game of the regular season after suffering an ankle sprain in early December, the Mavericks were missing senior Dan Barhoum after he suffered a concussion at practice a day earlier.

Sonko played well, scoring a team-high 10 points, but district rival Mountlake Terrace defeated Meadowdale 65-50 in a Wesco 3A game Friday, Jan. 12, at Mountlake Terrace High School.

“We made mistakes and they made us pay,” Mavericks coach Roger O’Neill said.

The Hawks (6-1 in the league, 14-1 overall) were especially effective with their 3-point shots, while the Mavericks (3-3, 7-7) struggled with theirs.

Meadowdale’s Justin Chambers scored 8 points and Mason Harvey added 7 points. Brendan Hayes led the Hawks with 22 points and teammate Mason Peterson had 12 points.

O’Neill said that depending on a fourth concussion test scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 18, he is hoping Barhoum will be able to play against Marysville-Getchell on Friday, Jan. 19, at Marysville-Getchell High School. The Meadowdale senior struck his head on the court during a Thursday practice.

Sonko came off the bench against the Hawks, but O’Neill expects he’ll be back in the starting lineup soon.

“It’s weird. Everyone’s on game 13. He’s on game 1,” O’Neill said. “I was pleased for game 1. You can see right away what he can do for us. He’s a match-up problem for teams. … It’s nice having him back.”
