Bruce Stedman is the new chief of the South Snohomish County Fire and Rescue, formerly known as Snohomish County Fire District 1.

He was selected over three other candidates.

The district was renamed after the FD1 merged with the Lynnwood Fire Department Oct. 1. The district serves Edmonds and staffs its three fire stations, two in Edmonds as one in Esperance.

Stedman has 39 years of fire service, including 32 years for the city of Alhambra in Southern California. He comes to Edmonds from Arlington, where he was named fire chief in 2010.

In 2014, at the request of Arlington mayor and city administrator, Stedman became public safety director, overseeing both the fire and police departments.

Stedman replaces Ed Widdis, who retired in March 2016. Assistant Chief Brad Reading had been interim fire chief.
