Edmonds man injured in fatal collision

Oct 22, 2013

The Snohomish County Multi-Agency Response Team is investigating a fatal collision after a Skykomish man fled a traffic stop and crashed into oncoming traffic.

The Skykomish man was killed, and an 86-year-old Edmonds man in an oncoming vehicle was injured.

The driver of the on-coming vehicle and two Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputies sustained injuries during the incident.

According to Everett Police spokesman Aaron Snell, at about 5 p.m. Monday, Snohomish County deputies and Washington State Patrol troopers were alerted about a vehicle, west of Sultan, where the driver was suspected of being under the influence.  Responding law enforcement did not find the vehicle.

At about 6:30 p.m., two deputies located the vehicle and stopped it for investigation of driving under the influence.

At some point during the stop, the driver drove away from deputies at a high rate of speed eastbound on Highway 2.  Deputies pursued the vehicle.

Around mile post 34, the suspect collided head-on with a westbound vehicle.  The deputies, pursing in two different vehicles, then collided with the suspect vehicle.

The suspect, a 55-year-old Skykomish man, died at the scene.

The Edmonds man had to be extracted from his vehicle and was transported to a local hospital for what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

Officials did not release the Edmonds man’s name. The Skykomish man’s name will be released by the Medical Examiner upon completion of their investigation.

Both deputies were also transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained during the collision.

The deputies are veterans of the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident remains under investigation by SMART, a team of investigators from various Snohomish County law enforcement agencies who respond to and investigate use-of-force incidents in the county.

Detectives want to talk with anyone who observed any portion of this incident.

Specifically, detectives are looking to contact possible witnesses in a white passenger car who were passed by the suspect while driving eastbound on Highway 2.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Witman and leave a message at 360-654-1143.
