Donald Montan Benn was born in Seattle on Nov. 27, 1930, and recently passed away on April 13, 2018, at the age of 87.

Don grew up in Edmonds, where he was very active in school. Participating in sports, drama club and as a cheerleader, he graduated from Edmonds High School in 1949 having made many lifelong friends.

While attending the University of Washington, he was drafted into the Army and served in the Korean War. He was then called up in the reserves to Alaska with an Army Intelligence Division.

Don married Lynn Holm in 1952, and they raised their two sons, Rick and Bradley, in North Bend, Oregon.

Don’s career with Bordens Chemical Co. started as a chemical engineer in the mid-1950s. He retired in 1988 as northwest regional sales manager in Eugene, Oregon, at age 58.

In 1981, Don married Joan D. Henry. They loved to travel, and spent summers at their home on Lake Chelan, where they enjoyed family and friends for more than 30 years. They spent the last 10-plus years in Edmonds in their Seavue condo, located on the very site where Don’s family had their homestead.

Don and Joan were loyal Husky fans and members of the UW Tyee Club for 30-plus years, attending every game and event!

Known as Grandpa Don and beloved by his extended family, Don – along with Joan – attended their grandchildren’s sporting and school events in both Oregon and Washington. He was their No. 1 fan, and they loved his fun songs and great stories. He lived a full and colorful life!

Don is survived by his wife Joan Benn, his son Rick Benn, stepchildren Cherri Hong and Bill Henry, his nephew Ted Benn Jr., nieces Judy Benn and Kristina Benn Kominek, 10 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his older brother Ted Benn, son Bradley Benn and stepdaughter Georgia Henry.

The family welcomes friends and family to attend the graveside memorial service to be held at Edmonds Cemetery June 24 at 1 p.m. A celebration of life reception follows at 2 p.m. at Edmonds City Park.
