Charles Sidney Green: 1939-2018

Mar 28, 2018

Charles Sidney Green passed away surrounded by his family on Feb. 27, 2018. Sid, who lived in Edmonds starting in 1976, was born March 14, 1939, in Seattle to Myrtle Annie Larson and John James Green.

Growing up in the Ballard neighborhood, as a kid Sid enjoyed playing baseball and basketball surrounded by lifelong friends in this close community. Sid also spent time in Everett, visiting his grandparents and extended family.

Sid graduated from Ballard High School in 1957, and attended the University of Washington. Soon after, he joined the Army and was stationed in Germany.

Sid married Hilda Helgeson in 1967 and raised two kids, Sid Green and Kristina Green (Pierce.) As a family, they enjoyed vacations to Maui and ski trips to Whistler. As an accomplished skier, Sid was a favorite instructor at Olympic Ski School for several years. Later in life, his greatest joy was being “Papa Sid” to his four grandchildren.

Hardly a day went by without seeing his grandkids, taking care of them when they were young and cheering them on at every sporting event.

A pioneer in the Alaska fishing industry, Sid began as a deckhand in his youth and made it his life’s career after the Army. He had many joint ventures with family and friends during his career, and truly enjoyed every minute of it.

As a lifelong avid – some would say obsessive – golfer, Sid loved being on the golf course with old friends and new. He savored being outdoors along with the joys and challenges of the game.

Sid is survived by his wife of 51 years, Hilda Green, and his son, Charles “Sid” Green (wife Kara Green and grandchildren Konrad Green and Charlie Green); daughter, Kristina Green (husband Dave Pierce, grandson Owen Pierce and granddaughter, Ruby Pierce); sister-in-law Emma Pedersen; brother- and sister-in-law Dick and Shirley Milton; and several loved and admired nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Sid was preceded in death by his parents, John and Myrtle Green, and his brother-in-law Einar Pedersen.

A celebration of life will be held in May to honor and remember Sid and the many lives he touched. Remembrances can be made to Ballard High School or Sons of Norway Everett Normanna Lodge #3.
