Baylor is now leading Sackett; hand recount in future

Aug 10, 2017

The latest results from the primary election show Deborah Kilgore still holding a commanding lead for the District 4 director position in the Edmonds School District. But Cindy Sackett and Cathy Baylor are locked in a tight race for second and headed for a hand recount.

The top two finishers will face off in the general election Nov. 7.

Results released 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, show Lynnwood resident Kilgore had 9,814 votes, or 44 percent of the total. Lynnwood resident Cathy Baylor, who was third in the last recount, Aug. 4, is now second with 6,157, or 27.67 percent. Edmonds resident Sackett was third with 6,146 votes, or 27.62 percent.

State law requires a hand recount when the vote difference is less that 0.25 percent.

The candidates are all seeking elected office for the first time. Incumbent director Susan Phillips decided not to run for re-election in District 4, which includes Edmonds schools.

Incumbent David Chan – the subject of a public rebuke after he was caught making racist comments – was leading the vote for Position 3 with Fire District 1, which serves Edmonds.

He’s tallied 6,443 votes, or 43 percent. Challengers are Michael Ellis, with 2,580, or 17 percent; P. Bret Chiafalo with 2,390, 16 percent; Brandon Richards had 2,030, 13 percent; and Brandy Donaghy with 1,612, 11 percent.

Only voters within the boundaries of the fire district elect commissioners. Edmonds, which contracts with FD1, does not fall within the boundaries of the district.

Official election results will be certified Aug. 15.
