Washington State Ferries to discuss future of Edmonds Marsh

Officials from Washington State Ferries’ will hold a public meeting to follow-up on its 2040 long-range plan, which they say will include discussion on the Edmonds Marsh.

You’ll have to take the ferry to get there. The meeting is 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 29, at Village Green Community Center in Kingston.

Also scheduled to be discussed is the Mukilteo terminal project update, the future of Edmonds Marsh, and the realignment of SR 104 through Kingston.

As reported in the Beacon, the local grassroots group Save Our Marsh wants a commitment from Washington State Department of Transportation that it will allow construction of tidal channels through the property WSDOT will eventually take control of as part of a restoration project to “daylight” – or uncover – tidal connections between it and Puget Sound.

The hope is to make the marsh once again accessible for migrating salmon species, including juvenile chinook salmon listed under the Endangered Species Act.

Although WSDOT bought the 22 acres of triangular Unocal land adjacent to the existing City-owned 22.5-acre marsh abutting Harbor Square for $8.175 million, the land is still owned by Chevron and in escrow until cleanup of the site – previously used for oil storage – is complete.

WSDOT originally purchased the land in anticipation of moving the Edmonds ferry terminal to the area. But Edmonds Crossing never materialized, and Washington State Ferries’ long-range plan for 2040, submitted to Legislature in January, does not reference the site as a possible location.

The land will not be turned over to the state until Chevron and the Department of Ecology sign an agreement, originally expected early this year but now postponed to this summer at the earliest.
