Volksswalkers’ Turkey Trot benefits food bank
Collecting more than 300 pounds of food and household goods, as well as a substantial amount of cash, the Sound Steppers Volkssport Club recently brought some seasonal happiness to clients of the Edmonds Food Bank.
The campaign to benefit the food bank on Saturday, Nov. 30, was part of the club’s annual Turkey Trot, a “volksswalk” that included 5K and 10K options that attracted nearly 300 participants.
Walkers started at the Edmonds United Methodist Church and, upon finishing, shopped, dined and otherwise enjoyed Edmonds’ downtown ambience.
The Sound Steppers Volkssport Club, founded by a dozen people a decade ago as the Edmonds Volkssport Club, inaugurated the original Turkey Trot. For years, they sponsored the annual walking event beginning at the Port of Edmonds office at the marina.
Today, the group has a sustained membership of more than 40 walkers.
Among its activities over the years, the club sponsored Edmonds’ first National Volkssport officers’ meeting, bringing more than 600 walkers from all over the U.S. to Edmonds over a four-day period.
The Sound Steppers provides free walks and free walk directions with 5K and 10K route locations in King and Snohomish counties to anyone who wishes to participate.
