Vandals knew what they were doing with swastikas | Letter

Apr 28, 2017

In response to "Dumb hate: Confused vandals tag vehicles with swastikas,” April 20: We need to stop blaming hate on lack of intelligence or confusion.

Those vandals knew what they were doing. They weren't ignorant of the effect their actions would have. They were hateful individuals trying to spread intolerance and fear.

When we call hate something else – stupidity, confusion or ignorance – we let the hateful off the hook. We also are refusing to confront that hatred and see it for what it is.

It's scary to see the dark parts of our community exposed like this, but we need to face it head on, and figure out what we can do to combat it – even if it's a gesture like Doug's dealership helping neighbors clean the graffiti off their cars.
