The Mukilteo Arts Guild kicks off its annual series of free summer events on May 28 with the first Open Mic Night.

Open Mic Night

Open Mic Night, in its 10th season, is back on Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. through Sept. 3 at Red Cup Cafe in the courtyard. Enjoy live entertainment by local musicians, writers and comedians.

“Since Open Mic Night started, it has become a summer staple for our community,” said Christine Awad Schmalz, president of the Mukilteo Arts Guild. “It’s a feel-good type of thing.

“We’re pleasantly surprised each week by new performers. You don’t know if it’s going to be poetry, music or performance art.”

The seventh annual Waterfront Art Festival is set for 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29 at a new location – the plaza of the Rosehill Community Center.

The event, co-sponsored by the city of Mukilteo, is a fundraiser for the Mukilteo Arts Guild Scholarship Fund.

Up to 64 booths will feature artwork will include a variety of artists and mediums, such as photography, painting, ceramics, drawing, sculpture, glass, garden art, pottery, wearable art, fiber and jewelry. There will also be live music playing in the plaza.

Schmalz said the guild relocated the festival to make it more convenient for patrons to park and shop.

“Mukilteo residents are our best customers,” she said. “They come every year just to buy their art there. That says a lot. They want to support the local artists and the student scholarships.”

Artists from all over western Washington are welcome to apply to participate in the festival. Participants will be juried in by a panel of judges.
