High school students living in and around Mountlake Terrace are encouraged to volunteer at the Mountlake Terrace Senior Center on MLK Day, Jan, 21,  as a way of honoring Dr. King’s life and mission. Volunteers will be helping staff at the Senior Center with a deep clean of the Center’s facilities.

Approximately 200 high school students from throughout the county are expected to participate in the national MLK Day of Service.

In its fourth year in Snohomish County, MLK Day is an intergenerational celebration where high school students volunteer to help seniors and people with disabilities, transforming Dr. King’s life mission and teachings into community service.

During this Day of Service, volunteers will help make a real difference through hands-on work, including assisting with household tasks and doing projects at local senior centers.

Teams of volunteers will be led by Senior Corps or other adult volunteers.

In addition to helping at the Mountlake Terrace Senior Center, teen volunteers can choose from projects throughout Snohomish County. Other locations include Marysville, Arlington, Stanwood, Sultan, Everett, Mukilteo and Lynnwood.

Organizations like school clubs, scout troops, and friends who want to volunteer together are highly encouraged to register as a group. Teens can also register individually.

The MLK Day of Service in Snohomish County is a partnership of United Way of Snohomish County, the YMCA of Snohomish County, Catholic Community Services and Senior Corps.

Volunteer slots at specific projects are on a space-available basis.

United Way is a community impact organization serving Snohomish County for more than 70 years. In addition to funding 102 programs through 39 agencies with a special focus on local health and human services, United Way of Snohomish County supports a number of initiatives focusing on early learning and education, financial stability for families, a youth program, North Sound 211 and an emerging initiative in survival English.
