Shooting suspect dies in hospital

Riley Leif Ottersen, the shooting suspect in an Island County homicide and subsequent pursuit and second degree assault occurring in Mukilteo, succumbed to his injuries on Monday, March 17.

The exact cause of death will be determined by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s office.

Ottersen, a 34-year-old Camano Island man,was reportedly shot by police following a pursuit that started near Stanwood on Sunday, Feb. 18.

He allegedly shot and critically injured a 44-year-old male victim in the head and neck on Camano Island, as well as a woman who suffered a gunshot wound to her arm who was treated at a hospital and released.

He then led police on a high-speed chase that ended with a shootout in Mukilteo.

According to Edmonds Police Sgt. Mark Marsh, the incident remains under investigation by the Snohomish County Multi-Agency Response Team (SMART), a team of detectives from various Snohomish County law enforcement agencies who respond to and investigate police use-of-force incidents in the county.
