Santa has a new helper
Five-year-old Colton McCallon will be the honorary tree lighter in Edmonds this year, traveling with Santa Claus by fire truck to the tree lighting festivities on Saturday, Nov. 30. Colton is the son of Felicia and Army veteran Nick McCallon, who served two tours in Iraq and was awarded the Purple Heart.
In addition to signaling the beginning of the holiday season, the local business sector aims to remind people that November is military family month.
Edmonds is the first city to implement the MVP program with year-round recognition of veterans and service members as a way to thank them for their personal sacrifices and commitment to our country. More than 80 percent of local merchants are participating.
Prior to the arrival of Santa and Colton, the annual community holiday celebrations will kick off at 4 p.m. with carolers, cookies, cider and coffee.
Throughout the day, local merchants will be participating in “Shop Small Business Day” by offering specials and appreciation for the ongoing support of local patrons.
Research shows more than 50 percent of the money spent in local shops and boutiques remains in the community.
