Salt & Iron, 190 Sunset tops in chowder contest

It was easy to keep clam during the second annual Clam Chowder Cook-Off Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Edmonds Yacht Club. It was National Clam Chowder Day and, for $10, you could slurp chowder samples from eight Edmonds restaurants, one Edmonds food truck and one Seattle-based catering company.

More than 800 people did just that, gathering to experience the best clam chowder Edmonds had to offer.

The five guest judges – Mayor Dave Earling, Nancy Leson, Heather Bosch, Jon Rowley and Kathy Passage – tasted each entry, made notes and sealed their selections in envelopes.

The result?

A tie for “best traditional chowder,” which is what you get when you have an even number of judges. A set of alternate judges resolved the stalemate between Salt & Iron and Swedish Edmonds with a blind tasting.

So here are the results of the Judges’ Choice Awards:

  • Best Traditional Clam Chowder: Salt & Iron restaurant
  • Best Cutting Edge Clam Chowder: 190 Sunset restaurant
  • Best Booth: Ivar’s restaurant

But what about what really counts? What did the 800 paying customers judge as best?

Here are the People’s Choice Awards:

  • Best Traditional Clam Chowder: Salt & Iron restaurant
  • Best Cutting Edge Clam Chowder: Here & There Grill food truck

“The people have spoken, and selected both Salt & Iron and Here & There as our winners for the second straight year,” Chamber President Greg Urban said. “Each restaurant will retain the traveling trophy and bragging rights for another year.”

Other participants included Bar Dojo, Red Twig Bakery & Café, Scott’s Bar & Grill, Salish Sea Brewing, and Seattle’s Pacific Northwest Catering.

Proceeds from the event will help the Edmonds Chamber produce An Edmonds Kind of Fourth parade and fireworks celebration.

The third annual Edmonds Clam Chowder Cook-Off is set for Feb. 24, 2018.
