Remembering the Hyak run in Edmonds | Letter
I enjoyed your article recognizing the MV Hyak's golden anniversary (“State ferry Hyak celebrates 50 years,” March 16).
In addition to serving briefly on the Edmonds-Kingston run in the 1970s, she was the No. 2 vessel on the run from the summer of 1989 until the Spokane took over in July 1998.
Because she has never had a thorough midlife refurbishment, she is due for an early retirement in just a couple of years, well shy of the standard 60 years Washington State Ferries aims for.
Her maintenance backlog has gotten to the point that it is viewed as a better investment to build a new ferry than to do the required refit to extend Hyak's service.
