Twenty-four original oil paintings by Oversee will be featured in the Rosehill gallery through June 29.

Oversee, a retired Mukilteo School District art teacher, said the ideas for his paintings are drawn from his Scandinavian heritage and memories growing up.

“My inspiration comes from growing up in Ballard, which is a Scandinavian community with a lot of fishing boats,” he said. “I paint predominantly in oils and like to use bright, bold colors.

“I was in the Coast Guard and spent some time in lifeboat stations, which gave me an appreciation of the power of the sea.”

In addition to oil, Oversvee does wood carving and water color paintings. Those works are not included in the exhibit.

Oversvee, of Everett, received his bachelor’s in fine arts from Seattle Pacific University and his teaching certificate from the University of Washington. He taught art for the Mukilteo School District for 27 years.

His work is on permanent display in the collection at the Nordic Heritage Museum in Ballard.

It has also been exhibited at the Folk Life Festival in Seattle, Jul Fest in Ballard, the Bellevue Art Festival, Edmonds Art Festival, and other shows on Whidbey Island.

“His style is impressionistic, but it’s very angular,” said Robert Stockton, chair of the city’s Parks & Arts Commission. “In my mind, it’s his Nordic influence.

“His figures are painted somewhat stylized, though not abstract. He puts his own mark on the way he paints them.”

Stockton taught art with Oversvee at Olympic View Middle School for many years.

A juried committee selects artists for exhibition in the gallery, which rotates displays every three months.

“They were quite impressed because of the size of his work,” Stockton said of the ad-hoc Visual Arts Committee. “It really fills up the space nicely.”

The gallery at Rosehill is open Monday-Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Rosehill Community Center is at 304 Lincoln Ave. in Mukilteo.
