Modern-day robber barons | Letter
Editor, The Beacon:
I agree with Nathaniel Brown’s comments opposing the coal and oil trains through Edmonds.
Rail common carriers are legally required to carry legal freight, but localities may not be required to make this easy or cheap.
Greenhouse gases and sulfur pollution are poisoning millions and heating our planet.
Much of the coal is being mined on federal land and under priced to profit private companies with little environmental or safety regulation much like the coal and railroad robber barons of the 1890s.
Sightline Institute of Seattle is investigating the coal under pricing and other aspects that need to be regulated.
This group deserves our support. Ultimately, we need to close these U.S. government-owned mines in the Powder River Basin to help save our environment.
