What does the future of newspaper readership look like? Are community weeklies going to outlast dailies in the newspaper industry?

Visitors to Harbour Pointe Retirement Community will discover the answers to these and many other newspaper questions at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, June 20.

Guest speaker, Mr. Paul Archipley is a forty-year veteran of the newspaper industry and publisher of the Beacon newspapers.

“I believe the future of the newspaper industry will largely be in community newspapers; people want to know what’s going on in their own back yard,” he said.

Mr. Archipley graduated with a communications degree from Cal State Fullerton and began his career doing layout and paste-up in the back shop of a local newspaper.

He interned at the Los Angeles Times and later became city editor of the Yorba Linda Star where he honed his skills as a reporter, photographer and copy editor.

He went from there to larger newspaper groups in southern California before moving to Washington, where he started the Mukilteo Beacon 21 years ago.

The business has now expanded to include the Edmonds and S. Everett Beacons.

Archipley has never lost his enthusiasm for the business.

“Although I am in the twilight of my career,” he adds, “I still enjoy coming to work. You never know what the news of the day is going to be.”
