Meadowdale’s Sanders takes first place at Wesco 3A meet | Cross country
Meadowdale senior Cameron Sanders took first place in a four-team Wesco 3A boys cross country meet Sept. 15 at Ballinger Park in Mountlake Terrace.
Sanders completed the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 58 seconds to finish ahead of Edmonds-Woodway’s Lucas Lacambra, who clocked in at 17:18.
“He ran well,” Meadowdale coach Kris Maraveller said of Sanders, who placed 41st at the 3A state championships.
The Mavericks have a strong top three with junior Colin Knechtel and sophomore Andy Burk, according to Maraveller.
The Mavericks’ fourth runner is senior Cyrus Marshall, who advanced to state in the pole vault.
The Mavericks top finisher in the girls race was senior Bear Lund, who placed 13th. Meadowdale’s Brooke Hoppe was out with an injury, but Maraveller was hoping she would be back this week.
“We have 10 girls out, which is more than we had last year,” she said.
Some of the Mavericks were not eligible because of a lack of practices, while others were recovering from shin splints.
