Kudos to Gov. Inslee | Letter
Editor, The Beacon:
Kudos to Gov. Inslee for directing the state Department of Ecology to study the potential impact of oil being transported by rail and barge through Washington state.
Plans are being made by oil companies to substantially increase the amount of oil from the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota along the Columbia River and north up the coast to existing refineries and others to be constructed.
Several oil trains per day are already running through many communities with a potential increase to 11-mile-long trains per day if all the proposed projects are built.
The danger from explosions of this very volatile oil along the route is high. We have seen the devastation and loss of human life that occurred in 2013 from oil train explosions.
All communities along the route should be ramping up their disaster plans in case this happens here.
In Edmonds, Mayor Earling has pledged to organize and hold a community disaster-planning meeting sometime next fall.
Sooner would be better than later since there are already oil trains passing through our community every day.
