Jan. 18 deadline to apply for FD1 Commissioner vacancy
Snohomish County Fire District 1 is accepting applications through Jan. 18 from residents interested in filling a vacancy on the district’s governing Board of Commissioners.
The vacancy was created at the end of the year when Millie Judge stepped down as commissioner to take office as a Snohomish County Superior Court Judge.
The Fire District 1Board plans to interview candidates and make appoint a new commissioner in February.
The appointee will have to run for election in the fall to retain the seat and serve the two years remaining in Judge's six-year term.
The five-member Board of Commissioners defines the long-term vision for Fire District 1. Responsibilities include:
· Determining levels of service and establishing goals.
· Determining type and level of funding and tax levies.
· Approving budgets.
· Establishing policies and approving operational procedures.
· Employing key personnel and supervising the fire chief.
· Guiding strategic planning.
· Representing Fire District 1 to the public.
Commissioners attend regular board meetings two nights a month and serve on internal and external committees.
They represent Fire District 1 at community events, fire service activities and other functions.
Fire District 1 Commissioners also participate in state and county associations to address issues that affect fire and emergency services.
