It's time to shop and celebrate!

For many of them the next six weeks will define their financial success so now's the time to SHOP LOCAL!
By Dave Earling, Edmonds Mayor | Nov 20, 2012

I have had my focus for several months on next year's budget.  I have delivered to the City Council a balanced budget for 2013. It is now their turn to analyze and make recommendations.

I am optimistic we will agree and move to completion in the next few weeks.

We are now headed into my favorite time of year; the time to give thanks, reflect and celebrate. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years, each in their own way, give us that opportunity.

As a part of this special time, I hope you will remember to shop local. In our community, we have an amazing collection of businesses, whether we are in downtown, Highway 99, Westgate, 5 Corners or Firdale Village.

No matter if you are looking for specialty shops, jewelers, art galleries, grocery stores,  restaurants, clothing stores, beauty salons, or automobiles, they are all right here!

These are the folks that service us all year round, and they rely on us to stay prosperous.

For many of them the next six weeks will define their financial success so now's the time to SHOP LOCAL!

We have added many new businesses in the past year that add new and interesting flavor to our mix.

We have new ownership of Old Milltown and the Antique Mall, both will add new energy and vitality to Edmonds.

The business community is about to launch a new Business Improvement District (BID), which will take on special projects that will enhance our local business district.

Next Saturday, Nov. 24, is Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday is a nationally-organized day created to highlight the importance of small business across America to our economy. What a great time to explore the diverse shopping opportunities In Edmonds.

As part of that day, we have planned some special events centered around the annual lighting of the Christmas Tree. There is a  Sing-a-Long at the Edmonds Center for the Arts, a Walking Tour of businesses provided by the Chamber, a glimpse of the nearly completed Main Street Project (yes, I wish the weather would co-operate too) and the Christmas Tree Lighting.

It will be a great day for all of us, young or old, a day to celebrate our good fortune to live, shop and play here! I hope you will join us!

This truly is a time to give thanks, reflect and celebrate. I wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving.
