Struggling to predict the final score of this year's Super Bowl?

You might want to consult with Holy Rosary School's Sister Kath Silverthorn.

For nearly two decades, Sister Kath and her colleague, Sister Cele Gorman, have been competing on air with KIRO Radio's Dori Monson to see who can best predict the final scores of the top NFL games of the week, including the Seahawks.

Sister Kath has won Monson's "One On One With The Nuns" competition the last three years, tying with Sister Cele last year for first place.

Each week on the Dori Monson Show during the NFL season, the trio predicts the scores of the three closest games.

So far this year, Sister Kath and Dori are tied for first place (46-32), with Sister Cele four games behind (42-36).

“Dori is one of the funniest people I have known and so easy to work with,” said Sister Kath. "He will sometimes catch you off guard about a religion question or tell us we should be in the Las Vegas pool.”

It's a comfortable role for Sister Kath, who comes from an impressive sports background.

Her father was a professional baseball player who signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and later became a Major League baseball scout.

Sister Kath no doubt learned to hold her own while growing up with eight siblings in Sedro Wooley.

She played basketball, baseball, softball and field hockey, and also won the state tennis championship for junior colleges in 1969.

She also liked to play football in grade school.

"It was okay to tackle in those days, not a lot of safety rules," she said.

Sister Kath has been teaching for more than 30 years, and came to Holy Rosary School in 1997, where she now teaches Pre Kindergarten-8th grade physical education.

She has been a Sister of St. Joseph of Peace since 1977 and has been a part of the Dori Monson segment for 20 years now.

"Dori called the province leaders from several communities to ask if they knew of any Sisters who knew sports," she said. "And our provincial, Sister Sheila Lemiuex, knew Cele Gorman and myself, so that's how it got started."

The segment airs at 2:45 p.m. every Friday on KIRO radio during the NFL season.

With only the Super Bowl left, Sister Kath hopes to clinch her fourth victory in a row over Monson.

Her final prediction of the season:  Seahawks win.

But she's waiting to learn more about the weather conditions on game day before predicting the score.
