Gallery North presents a special exhibition featuring the work of photographers Phil Kollen and Jeff Harrison. The July show, opening July 1, will include natural and architectural subjects as seen from each artist’s point of view

Phil Kollen is a Northwest native and a 1962 graduate of the University of Washington.  After many years as a hobbyist, he became more serious about photography and enrolled in the New York Institute of Photography, graduating in 2000.

Kollen is a member of Puget Sound Camera Club, and is past president of Olympic Peaks Camera Club. His work has been featured in numerous juried shows including the Edmonds Art Festival.  He has also shown in galleries in Port Townsend and Port Ludlow.

Originally working with film cameras, recently Phil Kollen switched to digital.

In the “Thru a Glass Eye” exhibition, he is showing a mixture of film and digital images.  “I enjoy nature and landscape photography,” Kollen said. “But I also look for unique patterns and unusual close up shots – or the picture within a picture.”

Jeff Harrison has had a lifelong obsession with photography and has built his knowledge and skill through workshops and college courses. He even was able to take a two-week course with world-renown photographer Ansel Adams.

Ansel Adams and his work had a profound influence on Jeff Harrison.

“Forty years later, I’m still digesting those lessons,” Harrison said.

Jeff Harrison considers the photographs he will be showing at Gallery North to be a reflection of his long time fascination with form, light, and texture.

“Black and white nature photography has a long history,” says Harrison. “It is my hope that my photographs will honor this tradition.”

Up in the loft, Kathleen A. Johnson’s  “Natural Connections” show of crows, owls and hummingbird paintings continues through the month of July.

You are invited to meet the artists and enjoy the artwork at the Artist’s Reception on Sunday, July 14 from 1 to 4 p.m.

There also will be a reception at Gallery North during the Edmonds Third Thursday Art Walk on July 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Gallery North is open seven days a week and is located in the heart of downtown Edmonds at 508 Main Street.
