Elizabeth Serena (Kane) Schmidt: 1926-2017

May 17, 2017

Elizabeth Serena (Kane) Schmidt, age 90, passed peacefully from this life on May 2, 2017, at her home in Edmonds. Betty was born June 3, 1926, in Plattsburg, New York. She grew up in Brooklyn, and spent many happy summers at her grandparents’ Lake Champlain vacation resort, Northern Pines, in Port Kent, New York.

Betty attended Girls’ Commercial High School in Brooklyn, graduated in three years, and earned a scholarship to attend Cornell University to study agriculture. On Aug. 25, 1950, Betty married Robert Lee Schmidt, a native of Oklahoma. The two met while Bob was stationed with the Army in Manhattan and Betty was working on Wall Street as a bookkeeper for First of Boston International Company.

Betty and Bob moved to Austin, Texas, where Bob attended the University of Texas and obtained a degree in petroleum engineering. Daughter Linda was born in 1951, and son Charles in 1955. As is common in the oil business, the family relocated numerous times and lived in Midland, Texas; Salt Lake City, Utah; and various locations throughout California.

From time to time, Betty worked as a bookkeeper, most notably for the American Cancer Society, but mainly focused on her family and her passion for gardening and baking. From 1976-2009, Betty and Bob lived in Huntington Beach, California, where they enjoyed the first 25 years of their wonderful retirement together.

They traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States, and made many adventurous driving trips through Alaska. They enjoyed time with family, and Betty delighted everyone with the outstanding preserves she made from the plums and cumquats she grew in her yard, and with the delicious angel food cakes and cream puffs she perfected.

In 2009, Betty and Bob relocated to Seattle to be near their daughter, Linda Crowe. Betty and Bob were married for 60 years when Bob passed away at age 84 in 2011. Betty is survived by daughter Linda and her husband Tom; son Charles and his wife Laural; granddaughter Courtney Crowe; her husband Sean Fogarty; great-grandchildren Lily and Quinn; and granddaughter Bethany Schmidt.
