Edmonds-Woodway track and field | Spring sports preview
Coach: Rick Fillman
Number of athletes: 49 girls and 45 boys
Last season: The Warriors boys team finished 4-4 in league, while the girls were 6-2 overall. Both teams sent team members to the post season, including the state meet.
Strengths: “Our girls sprints will be strong, we've got some very good athletes in girls hurdles and distance and girls throws,” said head coach Rick Fillman. “Our girls team, should be pretty strong, we're fairly senior heavy there. Our boys team, we have some very strong individuals there as well. We had a good senior class last year, so we have some young kids coming up who have some shoes to fill. Our boys team has got some success at the state level, but there's some real good potential and they are stepping up to fill that vacuum that kind of opened up from last year.”
Focus: “We're building strength and introducing drills and things that will help them in there events,” said the coach. “Mostly working on early season strength building and adding drills.”
Matches to watch: “Personally I get excited for all of them and I hope that the kids do too. The focus is always on the end of the season. It's those end of the year meets when you really want to be at their best,” said Fillman. “The ESD championships are really big for us. That's a real big meet for us, because it's kind of city bragging rights. Then the invites are always fun. I like the invites, those occur a little earlier. They are big meets, a lot of kids and good competition. It's a very festive atmosphere.”
The Warriors will host the first meet of the season on Thursday, March 20 against Meadowdale and Lake Stevens. The ESD meet is scheduled for Friday, May 9.
