E-W senior Stephen Smith's art at Frances Anderson Center
The Edmonds Arts Commission presents an exhibit by Edmonds-Woodway High School senior Stephen Smith in the McDevitt Young Artists Display Case at the Frances Anderson Center.
“This past year I found myself experimenting with the contrast of ideas, styles and subjects. In some ways, my life has been full of contrast: I moved to Edmonds from Kyrgyzstan at the age of 16,” Smith said.
In the acrylic and mixed media works on display, Smith compares the contrasts in subject matter, the use of mixed media and how different techniques change the mood of a piece.
“In my piece, ‘Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan,’ I tried to convey the unique cityscape,” he said. “I always enjoyed the dystopian air of the old (Soviet-era apartment) buildings – the collage of photographed images of the apartments over the light, painted mountains effectively captures the contrast between the two objects.”
Smith’s artwork is on display through June in the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St., Edmonds.
The Young Artists Display Case is next to the second-floor elevator and is available for viewing during building hours, 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
