Council support for business lacking

Oct 31, 2013

Editor:

For the past several years I have been a citizen volunteer for DEMA, the Downtown Edmonds Merchants Association sub-committee of the Chamber of Commerce.

DEMA sponsors, i.e. pays for, the Halloween party, the Holiday Christmas Tree Lighting, the Third Thursday Art Walks, etc., etc., etc.

The annual fund raising gala was enjoyed by a sold-out crowd on Oct. 18 at the Edmonds Yacht Club.

I am gratified that our mayor and his wife, as well as Councilmember Kristiana Johnson, were in attendance, and that Councilmember (and merchant) Strom Peterson donated to the festivities.  Where were the other members of the City Council?

Given the council’s job is to support EVERYONE and EVERYTHING that benefits Edmonds, I have seen little to no evidence of their support for such fundraisers, not just this one.

I hear, “We want more money for city projects,” but if a straw poll was taken (anonymously, of course!) among our merchants, how many could raise their hand and say, “Yes, every single member of the City Council has stopped by my business and asked me what my concerns are, or what will benefit me/us as small business owner(s)?”, thus raising revenue for the city.

I wonder who on the City Council would like to respond?  Or do you not shop in Beautiful Downtown Edmonds?

With curiosity,

Kathy Thorsen

Kathy as a business owner I understand how important it is for the city to create a business friendly enviroment. I have talked to many business owners in the downtown corridor about what they need  the city to do to help them prosper. Creating a buisness friendly environment in Edmonds is a high priority for me.    Randy Hayden     Edmonds City Council Candidate   Pos. 1
