Community Transit proposes fall service increaseBetter connections, more mid-day trips among 1st improvements since 2009
Thanks to improving sales tax revenue, Community Transit is planning to add new bus service this fall, the first non-grant-funded service improvements since 2009.
The proposal provides more mid-day service and better transit connections; restores an all-day, one-seat connection between Mukilteo and the Lynnwood Transit Center; addresses high demand between Lynnwood Transit Center and Edmonds Community College; and improves efficiency around the Alderwood mall.
The underperforming Route 110 between Mountlake Terrace and Edmonds is proposed for elimination. Impacted routes are: Routes 110, 113, 115, 116, 120, 130, 201 and 202.
The proposed fall service change would take effect Sept. 29, 2014. Details are available on buses and at www.communitytransit.org/2014changes.
Provide more mid-day service and better connections
• Route 130: Increase weekday mid-day bus frequency from every 60 minutes to every 30 minutes between Edmonds Station and Lynnwood Transit Center via Aurora Village and Mountlake Terrace.
• Routes 201 & 202: Restore combined 15-minute frequency weekdays between Smokey Point Transit Center and Lynnwood Transit Center via Marysville, Everett, Mariner Park & Ride and Ash Way Park & Ride. This increased frequency would adds 23 daily trips and improve connections with east/west routes, especially in the north and east county.
Restore connection between Mukilteo and Lynnwood Transit Center
• Route 113: Extend route to Lynnwood Transit Center via the west side of Alderwood Mall along 36th and 33rd avenues, Alderwood Mall Boulevard and 200th Street. Route 113 would no longer serve 164th Street and the Ash Way Park & Ride. Service east of the mall would be covered by revised Routes 115 & 116.
Address high demand between Lynnwood Transit Center and Edmonds Community College
• Route 120: Extend route to Edmonds Community College and add two afternoon trips. This would provide two more trips each hour to meet high demand between Lynnwood Transit Center and Edmonds Community College.
Improve efficiency around Alderwood Mall
Routes 115 & 116: Realign routes between Ash Way Park & Ride and Lynnwood Transit Center to operate on Alderwood Mall Parkway and Boulevard (east side of mall) rather than on 164th Street and 36th and 33rd avenues (west side of mall).
The west side of the mall would be served by revised Route 113. Routes 115 & 116 would no longer serve Swamp Creek Park & Ride.
• Routes 201 & 202: Realign routes between Ash Way Park & Ride and Lynnwood Transit Center to operate on I-5 rather than on 164th Street/Alderwood Mall Parkway and Boulevard. Passengers who wish to travel to the mall could transfer at Ash Way Park & Ride to revised Routes 115 & 116.
Improve efficiency by redeploying underutilized service
Route 110: Due to low ridership, Route 110 between Mountlake Terrace and Edmonds is proposed to be eliminated. These service hours would be redeployed to add service mentioned above.
Route 119 still serves 220th between Mountlake Terrace Transit Center and Highway 99, including to Premera, and Route 116 serves the area near Edmonds Station.
A section of the Route 110 routing between 76th Avenue and Main Street west of Highway 99 would not have bus service. There are very few boardings in this area now.
In 2010 and 2012, Community Transit cut 37 percent of its bus service and laid off 200 employees as a response to the recession's impacts on sales tax revenue, the agency's primary source of funding.
In 2013, the agency received a federal grant to add 30 commuter trips between Snohomish County and downtown Seattle, its first service additions since the recession.
The fall 2014 service proposal represents less than 5 percent of the service hours cut during the recession.
