But the current Governor says that Coral reefs are Doomed !
So Kathryn Shamberger of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts and her colleagues were surprised to find that coral reefs around the Palau archipelago in the west Pacific were dense and diverse – even though the pH of the water and the amount of carbonate were unusually low.
Here we report the existence of highly diverse, coral-dominated reef communities under chronically low pH and aragonite saturation state. Biological and hydrographic processes change the chemistry of the seawater moving across the barrier reefs and into Palau's Rock Island bays, where levels of acidification approach those projected for the western tropical Pacific open ocean by 2100.
Rapid rates of coral reef growth have been identified in sediment-laden marine environments, conditions previously believed to be detrimental to reef growth. A new study has established that Middle Reef – part of Australia's iconic Great Barrier Reef – has grown more rapidly than many other reefs in areas with lower levels of sediment stress.
