Arts Commission has opening

Nov 22, 2013

Are you a resident of Edmonds with a passion for the arts and a willingness to volunteer your time on a working board?

The City of Edmonds Arts Commission is seeking applicants to serve a four-year term. The application deadline is 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014.

The Arts Commission is made up of seven Edmonds residents who serve staggered 4-year terms.  By ordinance, four of these positions must be filled by people professionally engaged in the arts.

This opening is for a person with experience and interest in the arts, but it does not require professional experience in the arts.

Established in 1975, the commission is charged by City ordinance with “promoting the arts as an integral part of the community.”

Arts Commission programs include: Public Art, three rotating visual art exhibit areas, Summer Concerts Series, the annual 2 ½ -day Write on the Sound Writers’ Conference, tourism promotion awards to local arts organizations, cultural tourism projects, a variety of partnership programs in literary and performing arts, and special opportunities in the arts for youth.

Applicants are interviewed by the EAC Nominations Committee and appointed by the mayor and City Council.  Attendance is required at monthly meetings (1st Monday of the month at 6 pm) and each commissioner has at least one area of program responsibility.

An average time commitment of four to eight hours per month is standard for most commissioners.  An individual desiring this appointment must be willing to invest the time that is required and must be a resident of Edmonds.

Teamwork and collaboration are essential for effective participation on the commission.  Applicant resumes should demonstrate leadership skills and a strong commitment to the arts and the community.

The application and position description are available online at www.edmondsartscommission.org.
