Apply for student financial aid sooner | School brief

Oct 05, 2016

Two noteworthy changes were made to the FAFSA for the 2017-18 school year.

This year, prospective students may apply for financial aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid three months earlier than in years past. The new start date was Oct. 1.

The second change to the FAFSA lets applicants import their 2015 tax returns to answer income questions.

U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens can file the FAFSA. Those who are unable to file the FAFSA due to immigration status can file the WASFA. The WASFA is the Washington Application for State Financial Aid.

It is important to apply as soon as possible. Some types of aid are first-come, first-served. Students should also follow financial aid deadlines for the colleges they want to attend.
